We are a private training school who issue a certificate of training on completion of our foundation 20 day course or our 4 day groomers assistant course. This certificate recognises the attendance, skills and training that our students have completed. The courses are a foundation step towards qualification i.e. City & Guilds. It is a requirement that you have worked in the grooming industry for a minimum of 18 months before you can sit your City & Guilds. Please also note that it is not a legal requirement in the UK for grooming salons or their employees to have a recognised qualification.

Dog grooming is a growing industry with more and more dog owners taking advantage of the services provided by grooming salons. There are approximately 3000 grooming salons, the majority of which are individual premises, and increasing numbers are part of other pet related establishments such as pet shops, garden centres, boarding and breeding kennels. There are also mobile groomers who visit the animals in their own homes.

WORKING AS A DOG GROOMER

Each breed has different requirements and there are many types of coat which all require specialist skills and techniques in their preparation. The work involves bathing, shampooing, drying and clipping, trimming and brushing a variety of long and short coated dogs. Dog groomers should be manually dexterous with a good eye to hand coordination and an eye for detail. An artistic flair is an advantage. Along with these standard services there are also special procedures which include nail clipping, teeth cleaning, ear care and treatment for parasites. A love of animals is essential for this type of work, and a good deal of patience is required, with a firm but gentle way of handling. Good customer care is a large part of the job, and a pleasant courteous manners combined with a neat and tidy appearance are  essential.

Dog grooming for living can be described in many ways. Your clients, the dogs, come in all shapes and sizes, temperaments and conditions. Some of them are absolute role models who will stand patiently whilst Some of them are absolute role models who will stand patiently whilst you work your magic. Others appear to have one aim only - to hinder your progress. It is sometimes hard physical work which can drain you of energy. At the same time though it is satisfying, rewarding and often inspiring. working for yourself is a liberating experience. You can set your own pace, ie decide when you work, when you take holidays, how long you shut down for over Christmas and New Year and so on. However all of these decisions have to be balanced against the needs of the business too in terms of , for example, how much you need to earn to cover costs and provide you with the income you require. If your goal is to start your own dog grooming business you will need to take our CAREER COURSE. This course will cover each aspect of the leap to being self-employed. When you have completed this course you will be ready to start your own business and book in your first dogs. What you wont have is speed. This comes with experience and the only way to get that experience is to get started. This means that when you  start your own grooming business your income will be restricted by the number of dogs you can realistically take on each day. A newly trained groomer- working alone will only be able to manage 2 dogs a day to start with, so the initial financial rewards will be limited. However, with repetition comes speed and you can expect your daily income to steadily increase.
